Inter-Library Loans

The Inter-Library Loan Service (ILL Service) provides access to material required for research that is not held in the libraries at The National University of Ireland, Maynooth and St Patrick's College, Maynooth.

Cost

A charge of €10.00 per request applies to standard requests. For additional information email library.ill@nuim.ie.

Who can use the service?

The service is available to staff and registered students of the National University of Ireland, Maynooth and St Patrick's College, Maynooth, all of whom must hold a valid ID card.

How to make an inter-library loan request

Check the Library Catalogue to ensure that the item(s) is not held locally.

For journal/article requests also remember to check Electronic Journals.

ILL Request Forms are available at the Information Desk. Except for staff and authorized postgraduates (whose department cover the cost of their requests) full payment must be made at the time of submission

A completed Thesis Declaration Form must accompany requests for British theses. Please ask at the Information Desk or contact: library.ill@nuim.ie

How to make a request via The Library Catalogue (staff and authorized postgraduates only)

Requests via the Library Catalogue can only be accepted from staff and postgraduates where charges are billed to departmental accounts.

From the Library Catalogue click on My Library Card and identify yourself: Enter your User ID / Barcode and Verification (PIN). Click on Log On.

Click on ILL then select the category of material you wish to request:

• Journal/Article
• Book/Thesis
• Conference

Photocopies of articles etc. are supplied for research or private study and may not be reproduced in any form.

Please give full details and quote your source of reference if possible.

Under 'Preferred Media' click on the most appropriate media required. Example Book (photo) means a chapter of a book is required and Serial (photo) indicates a journal article is required etc.

• Click Go and the message "NUIM ILL request Confirmation" will appear.
• Click on OK.
• A blank form will open up, if you do not need to enter a second request, click on End Session. Click on Go to return to the Main Menu in the Library Catalogue.

How to speed up your requests

• Complete an ILL request form for each item.
• Give full bibliographic details (i.e. author, title, isbn, etc.).
• Please cite your source of your reference if possible.

Secure Electronic Delivery

This service allows for fast delivery of digitally scanned print documents from the British Library’s vast collection direct to your college email account.

To avail of this service follow the steps below:

• Ensure your pc has at least Adobe Reader 6.0 or later loaded.
• Open and print the test document from the British Library website: http://www.bl.uk/sed
• Documents must be opened/ downloaded/ printed ONCE only and within 14 days of delivery.

Contact Library.ill@nuim.ie for further details to confirm that you are willing to accept SED documents.

How to check on the progress of your requests

Check My Library Card from the Library Catalogue to view a list of your requests and check on their progress. You will be notified by letter or e-mail regarding delays with requests, however, if 21 days have passed without any correspondence from ourselves please contact the Inter-Library Loan Office tel: (01)7083901, e-mail: library.ill@nuim.ie

Click on ILL total requests to view the total number of Inter-Library Loan Requests that you have submitted.

Click on ILL active requests to view the number of active requests submitted.

Check the Status of the request to follow the progress of your Inter-Library Loan request.

Please remember to click End Session and click on Go to return to the Library Catalogue when you have finished, otherwise your personal details will be freely available for others to view.
